Newsflash – Bike riders in Toronto, listen up
So I am originally from Vancouver. Some of you may know this, well if you know me you will know this, I talk about Vancouver a lot. I try not to, but I think I generally fail at this. Anyways, in Vancouver people ride their bikes a lot. The city encourages this as there are several designated bike ways throughout the city. All in all it’s pretty awesome if you’re a biker. Also in Vancouver it rains a lot – in case you haven’t heard. And you know what, people still ride their bikes, and they don’t get dirty! Do you know why? Because they use FENDERS!!!!
I now live in Toronto. I like Toronto, and I have noticed that lots of people bike here too, it actually seems like more people bike here than in Vancouver. Yet the city here does not encourage it – weird. But seriously, bike riders of Toronto, why do you not use fenders? I simply DO NOT understand. Today on my way home from work I saw several people with a slim long stain up their backs from the dirty water that was being propelled without the inhibition of a fender. I don’t get it. Maybe someone can enlighten me. However I don’t think there is an acceptable excuse, you can buy fenders for $20. And that is how much it would cost to have your entire ruined outfit dry cleaned if you were to bike sans fenders in the rain.
hi julia!
i don’t have an answer to your question… but just on the biking topic:
i don’t bike in toronto (yet… still might make the switch). i want to; i’ve biked in every other city i’ve lived in, but the streets and drivers and horror stories freak me out. i’m clearly not committed to the cause…
but anyway, today i biked to work in berlin! i must confess, i was pretty nervous, not having any big city biking experience, but there are SO many bikers and bike lanes and people yielding to bikers… it was great!
i don’t know why people don’t have fenders. i bought fenders for my cheap-o bike when i was in london. then it was stolen… maybe because they have really cheap bikes…?
i’m stumped too
p.s. so, you’re a blogger now, hey? how’s life generally going for you?
